Q&A with “Fifth Ave., 5 A.M.” author Sam Wasson and film critic Caryn James

A lonely, struggling writer becomes enchanted with his neighbor: an independent young woman who strives to be a high-climbing socialite with a penchance for high-fashion and wild parties. But, soon he uncovers the vulnerability she has at heart.

ABOUT AUTHOR SAM WASSON:

“Sam Wasson is a fabulous social historian because he finds meaning in situations and stories that would otherwise be forgotten if he didn’t sleuth them out, lovingly.” - Hilton Als, The New Yorker

L.A native Sam Wasson studied Film at Wesleyan University and at the USC School of Cinematic Arts before publishing his first book, A SPLURCH IN THE KISSER: THE MOVIES OF BLAKE EDWARDS, in 2009. The definitive account of Edwards’s magisterial fifty-year career, Splurch – which to the author’s great relief impressed both Andrew Sarris and his mother – incited Wasson to explore the phenomenon of Edwards’s most popular film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, in greater depth. In 2010, FIFTH AVENUE, 5AM: AUDREY HEPBURN, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S, AND THE DAWN OF THE MODERN WOMAN became a New York and L.A. Times Best Seller, and was named one of the best books of the year by several national publications including The New York Times and Publishers Weekly.

The Picture House

Several years ago a group of concerned citizens in lower Westchester organized to save the 1920s Pelham Picture House, now listed on the NY State Register of Historic Places, from the wrecking ball. The Picture House, recently restored and renovated, is now an independent film and education center. The Picture House entertains audiences with great movies – indies, foreign films, classics, shorts, animated films and documentaries from around the world. By inviting, actors, directors, producers, screen writers, and film critics to discuss their work, we bring the back lot to our front door.
